Hubert Auriol was the first to win the Dakar both in bikes and cars. Since January 2014, this "restricted club" has 3 members including Stephane Peterhansel and Nani Roma the newcomer!

He began competing in trial & enduro events in the 70's. From 1979 to 1994, he raced the PARIS-DAKAR Rally, taking part in the first nine events on a bike and the remaining seven in a car. He won the event in 1981 and 1983 on a bike BMW entered by BMW France, finishing second in 1984. He broke both ankles on the penultimate day of the 1987 edition, while he was in the lead for his 3 win !

Then Hubert Auriol switched to the car in 1988, 3 years on a single seater buggy(!), then racing a works Mitsubishi Pajero T3, winning in 1992 the single and huge edition of "Paris-Cape Town" 16 000km long, co-driven by Philippe Monnet famous french sailor. He joined Citroen factory team in the two next years finishing on the podium of the Dakar each year.

In 1994, Auriol joined Dakar organizer's ASO and became race director of the event. He headed the event for 10 years till the 2004 edition.
